Alternatives to conventional lawns is a recurring topic among Sasaki's landcape architects interested in sustainability. Traditional, high-input turfgrass has long been recognized as having the potential for negative environmental impacts. These impacts come largely from excessive water consumption, nutrient runoff, pesticide and herbicide use, and equipment emissions.

Increasingly, there is a need for an alternative to traditional turfgrass that requires reduced inputs of resources and labor. This report which Peter Hedlund and I wrote, funded in part through a Sasaki GreenRED Grant, summarizes current developments in low-input, low-maintenance turfgrass alternatives to support for Sasaki's designers attempting to incorporate these concepts into their work.
