As I explore the design of new kinds of learning environments that are outside the conventional classroom - in lounges, lobbies, stairwells, corridors and courtyards - I am pondering more philosophical questions about what we are trying to get students to do in these spaces. Do we want them to walk into a room and know immediately where they should sit, what technology they should plug into, how they should engage with their fellow students and with their instructor? Or do we want them to have to think creatively about how they and their peers occupy and use a space? Does the space accommodate known patterns of use, or does it inspire new patterns of use?
